Jess’s Rule: Three Strikes and We Rethink — Supporting Earlier Diagnosis in Primary Care

Parkwood Surgery is supporting the new nationwide patient safety initiative known as Jess’s Rule: Three strikes and we rethink. This guidance, developed by the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England, encourages GP teams to take a fresh look at a patient’s symptoms if they have attended three appointments with the same or worsening concerns without a confirmed diagnosis.

Named in honour of Jessica Brady, who died aged 27 after a delayed cancer diagnosis despite multiple GP visits, Jess’s Rule aims to help clinicians reflect, review and rethink when a patient’s condition remains unresolved. It promotes careful listening, consideration of face-to-face review, peer consultation, additional diagnostic tests and, if appropriate, referral to specialist care.

This initiative builds on good clinical practice and supports earlier diagnosis of potentially serious conditions — which can improve outcomes and help avoid late diagnoses. Patients are encouraged to continue to share their concerns and feedback with their clinician if symptoms are ongoing.
