Chaperones

Parkwood Surgery is committed to ensuring that all patients feel safe, respected, and supported during their care.

During some consultations, a clinician may need to carry out a physical examination. Occasionally, this may involve an intimate examination. We understand that this can feel uncomfortable or worrying, and we aim to make the experience as dignified and comfortable as possible.

When a chaperone is offered

A chaperone will always be offered when an intimate examination is required.

You may also request a chaperone for any consultation or examination, even if it is not considered intimate.

Before any examination takes place, we will:

  • explain why the examination is needed
  • explain what the examination will involve
  • give you the opportunity to ask questions
  • obtain your consent before proceeding

You are free to decline an examination or ask for it to be stopped at any time.

Who can act as a chaperone

Chaperoning at Parkwood Surgery is provided by trained members of staff, usually a nurse or receptionist.

For safeguarding and clinical reasons, friends or family members cannot act as a chaperone.

The chaperone will:

  • be introduced to you before the examination
  • remain present throughout the examination
  • be positioned so they can observe appropriately
  • respect your privacy and dignity at all times, including during dressing and undressing

Your preferences

If you would prefer a female or male chaperone, or would rather a nurse be present, please let us know. We will accommodate this wherever possible.

If a suitable chaperone is not available, you may be offered:

  • an alternative appointment, or
  • an opportunity to reschedule the examination

Questions of concerns

If you have any questions or concerns about chaperones or intimate examinations, please speak to a member of the reception or clinical team. We are happy to discuss this with you.
